My Buisness card design

Business cards research

This design of business card is quite creative. To access the designers contact details the viewer has to tare off a paper strip. I like this interactive quality as it makes the card more memorable.
Paula has used some of her illustrative work on her business cards. This is a direct way to give an impression of her work style and personal quality.

I like these final business card designs, they appear a lot more personal and illustrative to the previous examples.

Evaluation OUGD203

The main aim from this module, has been to investigate and identify what my individual practical, conceptual and creative practice is, with in the filed of graphic design. I started off thinking this would be a good opportunity to develop my skills in illustration, as this is an area I was most interested in. Also the collaborative brief to begin with would provide the opportunity to share my skills and learn new ones form the collaborative partner.

The first part of the brief gave me a new insight into working collaboratively. I learnt the positives and negatives by this way of working and feel I have more of an understanding of how I work in a team. My choice of collaborative partner appealed to me for having skills in the areas I was lacking, such as type, layout, colour and a good understanding of how to produce a professional, quality project. With this in mind I thought I would step back a bit and allow her take more of a lead role. Coincidentally at the beginning of the project we struggled to grasp a clear concept and I feel this is a result from my lack of communication and involvement. However once the new clear direction of the project was decided I felt more confidence in my design practice and got involved more. The photo shoot was a very productive day and improved my skills and knowledge in setting up the camera equipment and controlling the adaptive lighting, with spot lights and colour filters to create the visual effect we were after. I also felt we had a good collaborative way of working that day. From that day we generated many photographs to develop into our billboard, promotion idea. I then gained an in depth knowledge of how to alter the colour and lighting in the photographs via Photoshop. To finish off the posters I developed my skills in layout and combining type and image.
From this project I feel I have learnt a lot of new skills from my creative partner, which I can utilize and created new possibilities and directions for my work in the feature.

Photography came to be a regularly used tool, through the collaborative project and was also the means for me to generate a large amount of primary research, at Leeds city train station. Researching into how other current designers have used 3D visuals in their advertising, helped inform our ideas and design practice. Perhaps more of this research at the begging would have allowed me and my creative partner to come to an earlier, design detection and focused concept.

Once completing the collaborative project, for the second part of the module I got the opportunity to write and carry out my own brief. Through a series of workshops I learnt how to categorize and pair up my skills to relevant briefs which would best suite my development. I enjoy drawing however feel my illustration skills are not at a professional standard yet. Therefore I was very keen to take an illustrative approach and develop my drawing skills, with a focus on the image side of design. After having completed and learnt new skills from the previous image elective, I felt confidant in my application of image. So decided to carry out a brief based on 'My dogs are barking' combined with 'wish you were here'. Originally a character design brief, illustrating everyday sayings from the English Language and a postcard design brief

After getting off to a slow start, missing an important crit and receiving a strong wake up talk from my tutors. I wanted to show myself that I was capable of getting more involved with graphic design, pushing my ideas forward and generate a professional project that I can be proud of.

I got straight into researching the English language and listening out for common saying and phrases used. After the experience of the collaborative brief, I knew I needed to narrow down and write a clear concept, early. I narrowed down my research and this informed the concept... design and illustrate a set of postcard designs based on English sayings, originating from the royal navy to promote an Navy clothing collection for Topshop. I enjoyed researching into other illustrators/designers work, I should have posted more of this, with regular evaluations and my own opinions. As this could have contributed more to my idea generating and design practice. Looking back I should have also carried out more research into my intended target market and the sort of imagery which would appeal to them. More primary research would have benefited my project at this stage with survey's and questionnaires directed at my target audience.

I spent most of my time drawing and illustrating the phrases, which I enjoyed and was my intention at the time. When researching in to the product, range and distribution, the project expanded. With new design ideas and deliverables needed of tag label designs, clothing, posters and carrier bags. I quickly took on a new way of working, I put my hand drawn illustrations on hold and developed a series of vectors. Through the use of colour, composition and navy theme I intended for them all to work alongside each other as a set.

My management and panning let me down on this project, I should have spent more time concentrating on the project range and distribution, taking my time over the layout and combining all project aspects to work well as a set. Also experimenting with different stocks and techniques of applying image i.e screen printing. I did go down to the screen printing room and prepare a screen, with the help of Adam, but other things came up and I missed out on this opportunity.

I had a few disasters thorough this project. I need to develop an organized way of saving work on the computer. Losing work through not saving has been stressful as I know it can be prevented. This in turn created problems when I came to printing out my boards as I had lost some of the original files and links, also type faces.

Crits were a real eye opener for me, viewing others work I can see a lot of the group are creating some nice projects at what I would consider to be at professional level. As for me they were an opportunity to ask how I could get my project up to that standard. Through group discussion the illustrations got positive feed back, but I don't think the project is at a professional level, this is something I will continue to work on over the summer and hopefully rework and complete to a professional level and enter the third year with a higher level of working practice.

Over all I enjoyed this project and it has created and opened up new possibilities with my work. This project is not yet over for me as I intend to get back to the screen printing room with some of my drawings and produce a set of to scale posters on different stocks for experimentation. I am now very aware of what is expected from me and the standard of my future work.

What I will do differently next time and what do I expect to gain from doing these?

- Attend all crits and sessions available to me, these have all been arranged to help develop my work and are important for me to learn from.
- Save work and title folders on computer.
- Use the college facilities more, as these can provide new processes, finishes and quality of work.
- don't allow work to pile up, complete set tasks within a realistic time period.
- draw up more initial ideas, produce more work to show and get feed back from in crits.
- constantly write up my work analysis, even if it is bad.
- title and date notes made in crit sessions and presentations.
- Test different types of stocks more.
